Based
in the adjoining Georgian building, Oak House caters
for the more socially able resident with dementia in
need of close, structured support for day by day living.
It can accommodate 10 residents on two floors with ample
living and dining space. There is a large landscaped
garden at the rear which can be used for leisure and
therapeutic activities under staff supervision.
Activities, both structured and ad hoc, form an important
part of the care provided at Oak House. The maintenance
of skill levels, encouragement of personal interests
and the provision of a safe environment is an essential
part of the personal therapeutic approach to the management
of dementia.
Highlands has a gradualist approach to that management.
Within the current state of knowledge of dementia, it
is inevitable that personal skills will erode as the
process progresses over time. In line with the aim of
providing in-house care for all levels of dependency,
it may become in a resident’s interests to move
at some time from Oak House to Park House, after discussion
with relatives, so that care appropriate to their needs
can continue to be provided within the Home as a whole.
Oak House has a dedicated staff base of its own so that
continuity of care can be assured under the overall
Highlands management which has responsibility for both
units.
